about

After a venture through space into the world of tomorrow, you land at another planet in another solar system today, all alone, with only your memories: your history. History history history. How do we shake it? Should we? It is with us and it makes us. It is then and now. It is often thought that the present alters history in its image, like tearing down a statue in triumph. But this is only one glimmer of history's reality. It is in fact history, considered dead, inanimate, that reaches forward into the present moment, transfiguring and shaping all that is. It presents all of the becoming of the world to us as experience interwoven with possibility. What marks will the legacy of human history leave? Why leave any at all? Why leave so many? What happens when there is nothing to collectively remember? History is a specter that haunts us, in both the frightening possibility of its totalizing existence and in its radical absence. But it is also the force of change and the grounds from which a framework of opportunity might take form, in which we might lay the groundwork for something better. This album is my attempt to live side by side with the ghostly burden of history and the emancipatory possibility of becoming.

"For the man says, 'I remember,' and envies the beast, which immediately forgets and sees each moment really perish, sink back into cloud and night and perish forever. Thus the animal lives unhistorically, while the human is burdened with it." -Nietzsche, On the Advantage and Disadvantage of History for Life

"There is no document of culture which is not simultaneously one of barbarism." -Walter Benjamin, On the Concept of History
